M31 - Andromeda

The Andromeda Galaxy is the closest galaxy to our Milky Way and lies about 2.5 million light-years from Earth in the constellation Andromeda. It is also visible with the naked eye and is best observed in autumn. To the naked eye, it looks like a fine nebulous spot, but in images it will show its bright core and dark dust lanes. Thanks to its study, we have much more information about our own galaxy. The first known written record dates back to 964 from the book of the Persian astronomer Abd al-Rahman as-Sufi. The image also shows two satellite galaxies M32 and M110.
